What actually fails on a laptop keyboard
Laptop keyboards fail differently from desktop ones, because they are built differently. There is no room for a full switch, so nearly all of them use a scissor mechanism: two plastic arms crossing under the cap, guiding about one to one and a half millimetres of travel down onto a rubber dome and a membrane. It is a good design for thin machines and a fragile one for everything else. The tolerances are tight enough that a single crumb in the wrong place stops a key working, and there is no way to swap one switch out.
The layout is compressed too. Most 13 to 14 inch machines drop the numeric keypad entirely and fold its functions into an Fn layer, which is why so many laptop keyboard complaints turn out to be about which layer is active rather than about a key at all. Older business laptops overlay numbers onto the U, I, O, J, K, L and M cluster when Num Lock is on — worth knowing if letters suddenly start producing digits.
Before anything else, run one test that settles the biggest question: plug in a USB keyboard and try the same keys here. If the external keyboard behaves perfectly, the problem is your built-in keyboard, and no driver reinstall or system setting will fix it. If the external keyboard fails the same way, the keyboard hardware is innocent and something in software is intercepting your input. That single check saves most people an afternoon.
