What WPM Actually Measures — and What Counts as Good

Words per minute is a keystroke count wearing a friendlier name. Because real words vary in length, typing tests standardise a "word" as exactly five keystrokes, spaces and punctuation included. Typing 300 characters in a minute is 60 WPM regardless of whether those characters formed short words or long ones. That is why a WPM score from one test can be compared against another.

This page reports two numbers because they answer different questions. Raw WPM is everything you typed divided by five — your mechanical hand speed. Net WPM counts only the characters that were correct, which is your usable output. The gap between them is the cost of your mistakes, and it is usually the most informative figure on the screen. A raw score of 80 with a net score of 62 says your hands are fast and your accuracy is throwing away almost a quarter of the work.

One point that trips people up: net WPM here is gross speed adjusted for correct characters, not the older penalty formula some exams use, where each error subtracts a full word from the total. The penalty method produces harsher numbers on the same typing. If you are preparing for a specific certification, check which formula it uses before comparing scores.

How to Perform This Test

  1. Choose 60 seconds: shorter runs inflate the number and are not comparable to published benchmarks.
  2. Position your hands: index fingers on F and J, thumbs resting on the spacebar. Both keys are notched so you can find them blind.
  3. Type the passage: the timer starts on your first keystroke, so take a breath first.
  4. Ignore the score while typing: watching the counter is the fastest way to lose accuracy. Read the text, not the numbers.
  5. Compare net against raw: if the gap is more than about 5 WPM, accuracy is your bottleneck rather than speed.
  6. Take three runs: use the middle result. Single attempts swing widely with passage difficulty.

Troubleshooting Common Hardware Issues

  • Net WPM is far below raw WPM: you are typing faster than your accuracy supports. Deliberately slow down 10% — net usually goes up.
  • Score is much lower than on another site: check the test length and the formula. Fifteen-second tests and penalty-based formulas both produce very different numbers on identical typing.
  • Speed collapses in the last 20 seconds of a 120-second run: that is fatigue or posture. Float your wrists rather than resting them on the desk edge.
  • Certain letters are consistently missed: run the keyboard test and press those keys individually. An intermittent switch is indistinguishable from a finger error at typing speed.
  • The whole keyboard feels laggy over Bluetooth: reconnect over USB and retest. Wireless polling delay is small but a low battery can make it much worse.
  • A key produces two characters from one press: that is chatter, and it inflates your error count through no fault of yours. Confirm it with the double typing test.

WPM Benchmarks: Where Your Score Sits

These bands describe sustained typing on ordinary prose over 60 seconds, at 95% accuracy or better. Short 15-second bursts typically read 10–20% higher than your true sustained speed, so compare like with like.

Age matters less than practice, but there is a rough progression: primary-school children typically reach 15–20 WPM, teenagers 35–45 WPM, and adults settle wherever their daily typing volume takes them. Someone who has typed for a living for a decade without ever learning touch typing can still be stuck at 45 WPM — hours alone do not build technique.

Typing Speed Requirements by Job

Employers who set a typing requirement almost always pair it with an accuracy floor, and the accuracy floor is the one candidates fail. These are typical published expectations rather than universal rules — check the specific posting.

  • Data entry clerk: 60–80 WPM at 98%+
  • Administrative assistant: 50–60 WPM
  • Customer support / live chat: 50–70 WPM
  • Medical or legal transcriptionist: 75–90 WPM at 99%+
  • Software developer: 50–70 WPM (accuracy matters more than speed)
  • Court reporter (stenotype, not QWERTY): 180–225 WPM

Note the last row. Court reporters hit triple-digit speeds on a stenotype machine, which uses chorded shorthand — pressing several keys at once to produce a whole syllable. That is a different instrument, not a faster QWERTY typist, and it is not comparable to any score from this page.

The WPM Formula, Worked Through

Suppose you type for 60 seconds and produce 340 characters, of which 315 are correct:

  • Raw WPM = (340 ÷ 5) ÷ (60 ÷ 60) = 68 ÷ 1 = 68 WPM
  • Net WPM = (315 ÷ 5) ÷ 1 = 63 WPM
  • Accuracy = 315 ÷ 340 = 92.6%

Those 25 wrong characters cost 5 WPM. Push accuracy to 98% at the same hand speed and net WPM rises to about 67 — a five-point gain from typing no faster at all. This is why every experienced typist gives the same advice: accuracy is the cheaper lever.

For shorter tests, the denominator changes. A 15-second run divides by 0.25 minutes, so 85 correct characters becomes (85 ÷ 5) ÷ 0.25 = 68 WPM. Short tests magnify both good and bad luck, which is why 60 seconds is the standard reporting length.

What is a good WPM score?
For most purposes, 40 WPM is average, 55 to 75 is above average, and anything past 80 is genuinely fast. Pair the number with accuracy: 60 WPM at 98% is more useful than 75 WPM at 88%.
What is the difference between net WPM and raw WPM?
Raw WPM counts every character you typed. Net WPM counts only the correct ones. Raw measures hand speed; net measures usable output, and the gap between them is what your errors cost.
Why is a word defined as five characters?

It is below average but entirely fixable, and it almost always means you are looking at the keys. Learning proper finger placement typically takes two to four weeks of short daily practice and moves most people into the 45 to 55 range.
How often should I test to track progress?
Once a week is plenty. Daily testing measures your mood more than your skill, because normal day-to-day variation is around 5 WPM either way.
Can I use this score for a job application?
The formula matches what most employers use, so it is a fair estimate. Take a 60-second test and screenshot the result — nothing is saved here. Be aware that some certification bodies use a stricter penalty formula that will score you lower.
