How these tools fit together
The layout tests all do the same job — confirm every key registers — but they draw different keyboards, and that matters more than it sounds. A Chromebook reports its Search key with the same code a Windows key sends, so a generic tester lights up the wrong key in the wrong place and looks like a fault. A Mac has no Insert or Print Screen, and its Touch ID key never sends an event at all. Testing on a layout that matches your machine removes a whole class of false alarms.
The diagnostic tests each isolate one failure mode, and they are not interchangeable. A key that registers twice per press is chatter. A key that never releases is stuck. Keys that vanish only when several are held together is ghosting, and the rollover testtells you how far that limit extends. These feel similar in use and have completely different fixes, which is why each has its own page rather than one combined "advanced" test.
The individual key tests exist because a whole-keyboard pass makes it easy to miss one section. Numpad keys have entirely separate codes from the number row, so a keyboard can pass a general test while the keypad is dead. Arrow keys need to be tested in pairs, not one at a time, or you never discover that your board cannot report a diagonal. Function keys often need Fn held on a laptop, which changes what the browser receives.
The speed and sound tools measure rather than diagnose. Two of them — typing and WPM — deliberately emphasise different things: accuracy with visible errors in one, net versus raw speed with benchmarks in the other. The sound test is the odd one out: it does not test your keyboard at all, it simulates what other switches sound like so you can decide what to buy.

Can a browser test find a hardware fault?
It can prove whether a key reaches the browser, which answers the question that decides whether you need a repair. It cannot tell you whether the cause is the switch, the ribbon cable or a remapping tool. Where that distinction matters, each tool says so on its own page.
Do you record what I type?
